How To Choose The Right Lighting For Industrial Park?

• When selecting and installing lighting for an industrial park the considerations are several. These range from cost savings through a reduction in operating costs to providing efficient lighting that enables operations to continue efficiently.

• The main considerations when choosing the proper lighting system for an industrial park are functional and operational. It is important to understand these so as to ensure that operations are maintained.

• However, in order to undertake the process successfully, one must understand the lighting systems available for industrial and commercial lighting. These are;

- Incandescent/Halogen lamps – in these electricity is passed through a wire causing a glow due to the heat from the electrical resistance.
- Fluorescent/Induction – these utilize ionized gases at low pressures to create fluorescence in phosphors.
- High-Intensity Discharge (HID) – high pressure gas has electricity run through it causing a plasma glow. Under these category there are different types of lamps such as;
- Metal Halide (MH) – use mercury, argon, and other metallic salts vaporized under high pressure to create a bright white light.
- High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) – Xenon, sodium, and mercury vaporized under high pressure to produce a yellowish-white light.
- Low Pressure Sodium (LPS) – vaporized neon and sodium under low pressure create a monochromatic yellow light.
- Solid State Lighting (SSL) – Electricity passed through solid state semiconductors. Most common form is the Light Emitting Diodes (LED).

Here are the most important considerations that need to be taken into account when selecting the appropriate lighting for an industrial park.

1. Purpose of the Industrial Park

An industrial park is a collection of businesses and industries located in a specific area. This means that there are a number of different businesses going on within the same area. Therefore it is important to distinguish the specific types of business going on in the area and what kind of lighting they will need.
• Areas where work needing maximum focus occurs need very bright and highly illuminating light.
• Storage areas need less lighting but the lighting must have deep penetration to make stored items visible across the deep storage aisles.
• Areas where dangerous work is done, need to be properly lit to ensure that the safety of workers is maintained at all times.
• Accessibility pathways need only be lit if the industrial park is used at night. However, security concerns may cause them to be lit at all times.

2. Safety and security

• Safety is a question of operational safety and health standards being maintained at all times.
• Certain business activity especially manufacturing can be very dangerous due to the tools, materials, and equipment that is used in this kind of work. It is important to ensure that these areas are well lit so as to ensure that the workers operate in a safe and conducive environment.
• Security on the other hand is a question of protecting the financial interests of the companies operating in the industrial park.
• It is important that there is adequate security lighting to deter theft of materials, equipment, and products.
• Furthermore, areas where sensitive materials or information is stored must have proper lighting to ensure that they are secured against corporate espionage.
• For example, a pathway and the door leading to the server room should be well lit to ensure that all entrants and users of that pathway are seen at all times.

3. Cost considerations

• Lighting is still a function of the economic considerations of running an industrial park since this remains a for profit venture.
• The choice of lighting must be influenced by the cost considerations of not only acquiring but also running and maintaining these lights.
• Certain lamp systems use more electricity and are therefore more expensive to run in the long run.
• A rule of thumb useful when determining the cost efficiency of any type of lighting system is the relative cost.
• The more modern energy saving systems such as LED are usually more expensive than the traditional High Intensity Discharge lamps.
• However, the increased cost pays off in the long run in the form of significant savings in energy costs.

Choosing light for an industrial park is a very important task, one that requires consultation of experts. Take into account the above factors as well as the layout of the industrial park and your
